ROOFING TYPES & MANUFACTURER INFORMATION

Due to the harmful effects of grease and oil on all roofing systems, most major roofing manufacturers will recommend or specify a UL listed grease containment system for areas that will be exposed to grease and oil. The damaging effects to the roof shorten its life and increase the likelihood for premature roof repairs and replacements, costing building owners thousands of dollars.

When obtaining a warranty for a building that has known grease and oil problems, it is standard operating procedure to submit information on the grease containment system to the Technical Services Department of the roofing Manufacturer.  In addition, approval must be obtained for your warranty at the time of the re-roof or the new roofing system.  Most roofing manufacturers will not extend a blanket authorization; they will give approvals on a site-specific nature.

Facilitec recommends that you talk to the Technical Services Department of your Roofing Manufacturer to make sure you are covered with the proper grease containment system for your needs.

MOST COMMON TYPES OF ROOFING MATERIALS

EPDM - Is a rubber roof, highly susceptible to grease and oils. This can be the worst type of roof material to be used in the area where grease and oils are present. Grease and oil dries out the membrane, causing it to become dry and brittle, which causes it to crack open. Installed by a few various ways; Ballast, fully adhered, particle adhered and mechanically fastener.

MODIFIED BITUMAN - Is a blend of rubber and asphalt with exposed surfaces. These surfaces are either smooth or granulated. When the roof becomes saturated with grease and oil the roof loses all of its waterproofing capabilities by turning to ‘mush’. One could literally put their foot through the roof. This is installed with a lot of hot tar or touch applied.

HYPALON - Is a white roof to reflect heat and keep the buildings cooler. Hypalon resists oils, pollutants and chemicals. Not grease proof!!! This resistant is considered oil splattering not ponding saturation. In this it falls just like EPDM and all other roofing systems. Grease and oils will dry out the hypalon causing it to get brittle and crack open. This causes roof failure. This is installed by heat welding the seams together.

THERMOPLASTIC - Is a blend of rubber, polyethylene and other synthetic products too scientific to concern ourselves with. There are also several versions that are close to same things. For our purposes, we will refer to them as Thermoplastic types. These types of roofs are the most resistant to grease and oils, still not grease proof, however far greater resistant than hypalon. This would be known for companies such Sarnafil, Duro-Last and Seal Dry. This is installed by heating-welding the seams together.

BUILT-UP - Is a tar and gravel roof consisting of 3 or 4 plies of fiberglass rolls with hot asphalt to bond each ply together and to ensure a weather tight seal. Very good time tested roofing system, however, does not stand up to grease and oil at all. The animal fats and petroleum grease/ oil saturates the plies of the roof, exposing the insulation/ deck of the roof. Install with hot tar and mops.

METAL ROOFING SYSTEMS - Are used on pitches roof applications as well as with engineered buildings. (industrial buildings) The largest problem for this type of roof is the coating on the metal roof surface and the seams where each panel is overlapping. Most metal roofing manufactures do not allow grease, oils, solvent and chemicals on the roof surface, and will void warranties.
